Topic:  Wal-Mart 2010

Wal-Mart will be even more successful by 2010.  While the world waits for Wal-Mart to collapse under its own weight, Wal-Mart waits for no one.  Demonstrating a remarkable capacity to manage the retail lifecycle, Wal-Mart keeps rolling on.  If you thought Wal-Mart was an impetus for change during the past five years, watch out for the next five!  Wal-Mart's strategy of innovation is not about creating incremental change.  It is about creating new businesses that disrupt traditional businesses.

How big can Wal-Mart get?  What categories will it dominate?  What moves must competitors and suppliers make to survive?  This session provided the answers.

Al is Senior Vice President, Business Development for Retail Forward, Inc.  Al runs the Dallas office of Retail Forward where he is responsible for the sale of Retail Forward’s Intelligence Programs, including the North American Intelligence Program, the Global Intelligence Program and the E-Retail Intelligence Program.  He is also responsible for consulting sales in the Midwest, South and Central Regions of the U.S.  Al also serves as a member of Retail Forward’s Executive and Management Committees.

Prior to joining Retail Forward, Al served as Director of Senn-Delaney/Arthur Andersen’s retail strategy practice.  He also has 18 years of consulting experience with the Management Horizons Division of Price Waterhouse where he assisted retailers and consumer goods suppliers with strategic planning and marketing strategy.

Al’s retail consulting experience includes developing strategies and implementation plans for improving market positioning, customer focus, competitive appeals and merchandising economics.  Al’s experience with consumer products companies includes marketing, brand strategies, developing retail distribution strategies, selling new channels, introducing new products and advising clients on the success requirements for effective implementation of retail marketing programs.

Topic:  The Michaels Stores Story

Jeff discussed the Michaels Stores Story, starting with the financial turnaround in 1996.  Since then, Michaels Stores has delivered record sales and operating income performance by focusing on improving their execution of retiling fundamentals within the $24 billion Arts and Crafts industry.  He shared where the company is in its journey and what the future might hold for Michaels Stores.

Jeff Boyer joined Michaels Stores, Inc. in January, 2003, bringing over 20 years of experience in a variety of industries, including retail, consumer goods and public accounting, serving in a number of top-level jobs with many well-known companies.

In the retail sector, he spent five years with Sears Roebuck & Company, advancing to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, and he served briefly as the Chief Financial Officer of Kmart Corporation.  Prior to joining Sears in 1996, he held the positions of Vice President, Financial Planning and Analysis at Kraft General Foods, Vice President, Business Development at the Pillsbury Company and other key financial posts with the Quaker Oats Company and the Nutrasweet Company. He also spent four years at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a Senior Accountant. 

Jeff is a Certified Public Accountant, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Illinois.

Kathleen Mason is a retail executive with more than 25 years successful merchandising, marketing and management experience in department, chain and specialty stores.

She is currently President and CEO of Tuesday Morning Corporation (NASDAQ:TUES), North America’s largest operator of first quality, deep discount and closeout home furnishings and gift stores.  Previously, she was President of HomeGoods, Inc., which sells off-price, brand names for the home.  The company is a subsidiary of TJX Companies that also owns TJMaxx and Marshalls.   Kathleen spent 10 years at Cherry & Webb, a well-known New England regional chain specializing in women’s apparel and cosmetics, where she was Executive Vice President before becoming President, Chairman and CEO in 1992 and leading the company to five profitable years.

A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, she began her career with the Kaufmanns Division of the May Company where she became one of the youngest vice president/divisional merchandise managers in the company history.  She also has held senior management positions with the Emporium, Mervyns and The Limited Stores.

Her many affiliations include:  The Executive Committee, an international organization of CEO’s, The Committee of 200, Executive Women’s Roundtable, Charter 100, CERT, the Board of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Governors at the University of North Texas, and the New England Conservatory of Music where she serves as an Overseer.  Kathleen is also a Director of Genesco, Inc., manufacturer of Johnston & Murphy and Dockers Shoes; Director of The Men’s Wearhouse; and recently joined the board of Hot Topic, a mall based chain specializing in apparel, accessories, and music for teenagers.

Kathleen was honored as Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southwest in 2003 and was recently awarded the Luminary Award for Corporate Innovation by the Committee of 200. The Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth named Tuesday Morning as the winner of the Corporate Growth Award for 2004/2005.

Topic for the evening:  "The Competitors You Don't See"

Nigel Travis, a British national, is president and chief operating officer of Blockbuster Inc., and is responsible for worldwide company operations, store concept development, distribution, marketing, stores HR and domestic product and oversees the development and implementation of new media strategies, including the marketing aspects of blockbuster.com.  Previously, he served Blockbuster as executive vice president and president of the Worldwide Stores Division and various other senior positions including president international. Travis reports to Blockbuster Chairman and CEO John F. Antioco.

A retail industry veteran, Travis joined Blockbuster in 1994 as vice president, Europe.  Previously, he was senior vice president and managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Burger King Corporation, part of Grand Metropolitan Corporation, PLC.  Prior to that, Travis worked in human resources for a number of companies, including Grand Metropolitan, Massey Ferguson and Rolls Royce. 

Travis earned a bachelor of arts degree, with honors, in business studies from Middlesex University in London.  He is an independent director with The Bombay Company.

Topic for the evening:  JCPenney Celebrates 10 Years of Success Online

With its strong catalog infrastructure and brand recognition throughout the country, JCPenney was the first national department store to go online back in 1994.

 

John Irvin is executive vice president and president of catalog and internet of J. C. Penney Corporation, Inc., one of America’s largest department store, catalog and e-commerce retailers.

Mr. Irvin was appointed executive vice president in 2002. He was elected senior vice president and president of Catalog and Internet in 2001. Irvin joined JCPenney from Spiegel, Inc., where he was President and Chief Executive Officer.  Prior to Spiegel, he was Senior Vice President and General Merchandise Manager for Women’s Apparel, Accessories, Footwear, Intimate Apparel, and Fine Jewelry at Mervyn’s. Previously, he was President of Maison Blanche Department Stores in Louisiana.  Prior to that, he was President and C.O.O. of the Dallas Market Center.  In addition, Irvin has held a number of senior level positions including senior merchandising responsibilities at Sanger Harris and Foley’s.  

 Mr. Irvin graduated in 1971 with a BA in Business from Texas Christian University.  He has 2 children, Kirsten and Jon-Michael.

Economist's Corner

 

Carl E. Steidtmann, Chief Economist for Deloitte Research, is a nationally recognized expert on economic forecasting of retail sales activity, consumer, technology and general economic trends.
 
Based in New York, Dr. Steidtmann works with individual clients in assessing the impact of economic, demographic, political and technological changes on their business strategies.  He has also testified on numerous occasions as an expert witness on retailing related issues in both state and federal courts. 
 
His research has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Women's Wear Daily, USA Today and The New York Times, among other publications.  Dr. Steidtmann has appeared on the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour, CNBC, and the Nightly Business Report as an expert on consumer issues.
 
Prior to joining Deloitte Research Dr. Steidtmann was with PricewaterhouseCoopers where he authored or co-authored over 400 publications on economics, demographics, competition and socio-technological trends as they relate to business. Dr. Steidtmann was Vice President with Nakagama & Wallace, a Wall Street firm that consults on world economic trends, exchange rates and equity markets.
 
He has also served as senior advisor and economist for the American Productivity Center, where he acted as the technical adviser to the White House Conference on Productivity.  He was an economics instructor at the University of Colorado, and worked with Mountain Bell as an internal systems consultant and with IBM as a systems engineer.
 
Dr. Steidtmann is a frequent conference and after dinner speaker on marketing, technology, consumer trends and the general economic outlook.  He has addressed a hundreds of groups on economics, technology and productivity, including the National Retail Federation, the Food Marketing Institute, and the International Mass Retail Association in addition to individual companies.
 
An award-winning instructor and systems analyst, Dr. Steidtmann was selected one of the 25 most influential consultants for 2003 by Consulting Magazine for his work in consumer spending forecasting.  
 
Dr. Steidtmann earned his Ph.D., master's and bachelor's degrees from the University of Colorado, majoring in economics, statistics, and history, respectively.

Mr. Tansky's topic for the night was

Specialty Retailing at It's Very Best

 

Burt Tansky is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Neiman Marcus Group, Inc. 

The Neiman Marcus Group is the premier retailer of luxury and designer merchandise in the United States.  The company is known worldwide for its 95 year commitment to merchandising excellence and customer service.    Mr. Tansky oversees the strategic direction, operations, and expansion of The Neiman Marcus Group, which is composed of 35 Neiman Marcus stores  and Bergdorf Goodman in New York, as well as Neiman Marcus Direct, the direct-to-consumer and online division, including Horchow and the Chef’s Catalog.  The company has investments in Laura Mercier Cosmetics and Kate Spade.

Mr. Tansky joined the company in 1990 as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bergdorf Goodman.  In 1994, he became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Neiman Marcus.  In 1999, he was named President and Chief Operating Officer of The Neiman Marcus Group, and in 2000, he was elevated to his present position.  Prior to his affiliation with The Neiman Marcus Group, he was President of Saks Fifth Avenue, joining that company in 1977 from I.Magnin where he had been Senior Vice President and General Merchandise Manager.  His extensive retail background also includes management positions at Kaufmann’s and Filene’s.  Mr. Tansky was educated at the University of Pittsburgh. 

During his tenure, the company has opened over 14 new Neiman Marcus stores and renovated others, including Bergdorf Goodman. An ardent believer in the market for luxury on-line, Tansky has been instrumental in the development and refinement of the Company’s e-commerce businesses.  Furthermore, he is credited with returning Neiman Marcus to its position as the leading retailer of luxury and trend with emphasis on American and European designers.    In 2002, Mr. Tansky was appointed a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, the highest honor awarded by the French government.  This past January 13, Mr. Tansky was honored by the National Retail Federation with its Gold Medal Award and named him Retailer of the Year, the highest individual honor in retailing.

Mr. Tansky has maintained a strong commitment over the years to charity and community service in both New York City and Dallas,Texas.  He has received special recognition and honors from a number of important and well-known institutions and charities such as the American Jewish Committee, the Phoenix House, the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine and the National Alliance of Autism Research. He serves on the board of the Children’s Hearing Institute, as well as the Phoenix House and the Phoenix Houses of Texas, The Children’s Hospital and the National Jewish and Medical Research Center.  He is very active in raising funds for the Vogel Alcove in Dallas, Texas. 

Tansky and his wife, Rita, reside in Dallas and have two children, Michael and Hyla, and three grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Weiss and Sascha Tansky.
